4-Day Desert Tour — Zagora and Merzouga from Marrakech
Two deserts in four days. Zagora on Day 1, Erg Chebbi on Day 2 and 3. The only tour from Marrakech that takes you through both the Draa Valley and the Sahara dunes of Merzouga — without backtracking.
Two Deserts, One Tour
Most Morocco desert tours make you choose — Zagora or Merzouga. This tour does both. It makes sense geographically: Zagora sits on the Draa Valley road south of Ouarzazate, and the route from Zagora to Merzouga cuts east through the Anti-Atlas, passing through landscapes most tourists never see — nomadic territory, ancient oases, the holy city of Rissani.
Day 1 takes you from Marrakech over the Atlas to Zagora for a first night in the desert. Day 2 crosses the Anti-Atlas to Erg Chebbi. Days 3 and 4 give you the full Merzouga experience — sunrise on the dunes, Todra Gorges on the return — before arriving back in Marrakech on the evening of Day 4.
The two deserts are genuinely different. Zagora is the Draa Valley desert — lower dunes, ancient kasbahs, palmeries. Merzouga is the Sahara proper — 150-metre orange dunes, absolute silence, the sky at night. Doing both in sequence lets you feel that difference directly rather than reading about it.

Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Draa Valley → Zagora
Departure from Marrakech between 7am and 8am. South over the Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka. Stop at Ait Benhaddou for the UNESCO kasbah visit. Lunch in Ouarzazate. Afternoon drive south through the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river, lined with ancient ksour and date palm oases stretching for 200 kilometres. Arrival in Zagora in the late afternoon. Camel ride to the desert camp at sunset. Traditional dinner, fire, stars.
Zagora → Anti-Atlas → Rissani → Merzouga
Sunrise over the Zagora dunes before breakfast. The drive east crosses the Anti-Atlas mountains on a route few tourists take — hammada plateaux, nomadic territory, occasional dromedary herds on the roadside. Stop at the oasis of Alnif for lunch. Through the holy city of Rissani — the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco's ruling family. Arrival at Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon for the camel ride to the Berber camp. Second night under the stars, this time in the Sahara proper.
Erg Chebbi sunrise → Merzouga → Dades Valley
Early wake-up for the sunrise on Erg Chebbi — the dunes turn from deep orange to gold in the first twenty minutes of daylight. Breakfast at the camp, camel ride back to the village. Morning free for optional activities: quad biking, sandboarding, a visit to a local Gnawa musician. Afternoon drive west towards Dades. Overnight in a guesthouse in the Dades Valley.
Todra Gorges → Ouarzazate → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
Morning drive through the Todra Gorges — 300-metre canyon walls and a river at the base. Continue west through Ouarzazate and back over the Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka. Arrival in Marrakech between 7pm and 9pm depending on stops. Drop-off at your hotel.

Can you visit both Zagora and Merzouga in one tour?
Yes — and the geography makes it logical. Zagora sits on the Draa Valley road south of Ouarzazate. From Zagora, the route cuts east through the Anti-Atlas to Merzouga — a road most tourists never take, through hammada plateaux, nomadic territory and the holy city of Rissani. No backtracking. The two deserts are genuinely different: Zagora is the Draa Valley desert with palmeries and ancient kasbahs, Merzouga is the Sahara proper with 150-metre orange dunes. Doing both in sequence lets you feel that difference directly.
What is the typical itinerary for a 4-day Zagora and Merzouga tour?
Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Draa Valley → Zagora (camel ride + camp night). Day 2: Zagora sunrise → Anti-Atlas crossing → Rissani → Merzouga Erg Chebbi (camel ride + camp night). Day 3: Merzouga sunrise → free morning (quad biking, sandboarding, Khamlia village) → Dadès Valley (guesthouse). Day 4: Todra Gorge → Ouarzazate → Atlas → Marrakech, arriving 7pm to 9pm.
How much driving is involved in a tour visiting both deserts?
More than a standard Merzouga tour — that's the honest answer. Day 1 is around 6 hours Marrakech to Zagora. Day 2 is around 5 to 6 hours Zagora to Merzouga across the Anti-Atlas. Day 4 is around 7 to 8 hours back to Marrakech. Day 3 is the short day — Merzouga to Dadès Valley, about 3 hours. Total driving across 4 days: roughly 22 to 24 hours. Spread over 4 days with stops it is manageable, but this is not a tour for people who dislike long drives.
Private or group — which is better for visiting both Zagora and Merzouga?
Private only — this tour is not available as a shared group. The route between the two deserts crosses the Anti-Atlas on roads that no shared minibus follows on a fixed daily schedule. Private means your vehicle, your guide, and the flexibility to stop on the Anti-Atlas crossing where most tours don't. For groups of 3 or more, the price per person works out competitive. For 2 people it costs more per head than a standard shared Merzouga tour, but you're getting two deserts and a route nobody else takes.
What accommodations are offered in Zagora and Merzouga camps?
Both nights are in traditional Berber bivouac camps — nomad-style tents with comfortable mattresses and blankets provided. The Zagora camp sits in the Draa Valley landscape with date palms visible in the distance. The Merzouga camp is in the open Sahara surrounded by 150-metre dunes. Bathroom facilities at both camps are shared and basic. If you want a private bathroom, the mid-range or luxury upgrade at Merzouga adds that — ask when booking. The third night is in a proper guesthouse in the Dadès Valley with a private room and en-suite bathroom.
