3-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga
Cross the High Atlas Mountains, spend a night in the Sahara dunes at Erg Chebbi and wake up before sunrise to watch the desert come alive. The most popular Morocco desert tour — departing every day from Marrakech.
The 3-Day Merzouga Desert Tour — What to Expect
This is the tour most people picture when they think of Morocco. Three days is the minimum that actually makes sense for Merzouga — see how 3 days compares to 4 — long enough to justify the drive, short enough to fit into a week-long trip. The route takes you through three completely different landscapes: the High Atlas Mountains in the morning, the Draa Valley in the afternoon, and the Sahara by sunset.
The Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass sits at 2,260 metres — on a clear day you can see snow on the peaks in winter and spring. The stop at Ait Benhaddou (the UNESCO kasbah used in Game of Thrones, Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia) takes about an hour. Ouarzazate is where most tours stop for lunch. Then the landscape flattens, the palmeries appear, and by early evening the road turns into a track and the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise on the horizon.
The camel ride to the camp takes about 45 minutes. The camp is traditional Berber — shared tents, dinner cooked on-site, music around a fire. The desert at night is genuinely dark and genuinely quiet. The second morning starts at 5am for the sunrise climb. Worth it.

Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Merzouga
Pickup from your hotel in Marrakech between 7am and 8am. The drive heads south through the High Atlas Mountains on the Tizi n'Tichka road — the highest paved mountain pass in Morocco at 2,260 metres. First stop: Ait Benhaddou, the fortified ksar on the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, used in Game of Thrones, Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. Lunch in Ouarzazate. The afternoon takes you through Skoura and along the Draa Valley. Arrival at Merzouga in the late afternoon. Camel ride to the Berber camp timed for sunset. Dinner at the camp, music around the fire, and a sky full of stars.
Erg Chebbi sunrise → Rissani → Dades Valley
Wake-up call at 5am for the sunrise climb. The light on Erg Chebbi in the first twenty minutes of morning is unlike anything else in Morocco — deep orange turning to gold, no wind, no noise. Breakfast back at the camp, then the camel ride back to the village. Morning free for anyone who wants to explore — quad biking and sandboarding available at extra cost. After lunch, the return drive begins through Rissani. Overnight in a guesthouse in the Dades Valley.
Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
Morning at leisure before the drive through the Todra Gorges — a narrow canyon with 300-metre walls. Continue through Ouarzazate and back over the Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka. Return to Marrakech between 7pm and 9pm. Drop-off at your hotel.

How much does a 3-day Merzouga tour from Marrakech cost?
Shared group tours start at €80 per person — includes transport, one hotel night on route, camel trek, one night in a desert camp, breakfast and dinner. Lunch not included, budget €10 minimum per stop. Private tours from €100 for 2 people. Entrance fees are never included — Aït Benhaddou is around 20 MAD. Optional quad biking at Merzouga costs €50 to €80 extra per person on site — worth knowing before you arrive so it doesn't feel like a surprise.
Why do you need at least 3 days to visit Merzouga?
Simple math. Merzouga is 560km from Marrakech — 9 to 10 hours driving each way. In 2 days that's one day driving there, one night in the desert, one day driving back. You'd spend more time in the vehicle than in the dunes. 3 days is the minimum that makes sense: one night in a hotel on route, one night at Erg Chebbi, and enough time at each stop to actually experience it. If you only have 2 days, Zagora is the honest answer — 6 hours from Marrakech, same camp experience, you arrive before dark.
Private vs shared — which is better for a 3-day Merzouga tour?
Both work. Shared tours run 8 to 14 people on a fixed itinerary — great for solo travelers and tight budgets. The campfire at Erg Chebbi with a mixed group is genuinely one of the better social experiences Morocco offers. Watch out for shared tours that make commission stops at carpet shops — ask before booking whether the itinerary includes any "optional" shop visits. Private means your vehicle, your pace, no commission stops. For couples and families it often works out close in price per person. Simple rule: solo or tight budget → shared. Couple, family, or anyone who hates being rushed → private.
Is a luxury desert camp worth it for Merzouga?
Depends on what you're there for. The desert itself — dunes, stars, silence, sunrise — is identical regardless of camp level. What changes with luxury: private bathroom with hot shower, proper bed, heating for cold nights, better food. After a 9-hour drive, a hot shower matters more than people expect. Standard camps have shared bathrooms and the same campfire and Gnawa music — perfectly fine if you're there for the experience rather than the amenities. Mid-range is the sweet spot for most: private tent, decent bathroom, without the full glamping price. We offer all three levels — ask when booking and we'll tell you honestly what each includes.
What to pack for a Marrakech to Merzouga desert trip?
3 days means 3 different environments — mountain pass, valley hotel, desert camp. One soft bag covers it all. Long trousers for the camel ride. A warm layer for desert nights — temperatures drop to 4°C in winter, and even summer nights are cold after 11pm. A scarf or chech for wind and sand. Closed shoes for the dunes, sandals for the camp. High SPF sunscreen — altitude at Tizi n'Tichka and desert reflection both burn fast. Power bank — standard camps have no charging points. Cash for lunches, tips and entrance fees. Sleeping bag not needed — blankets provided. Pack a small daypack separately: main bag stays in the vehicle during the camel ride.
