2-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Zagora
Only 2 days but the full desert experience — camel ride at sunset, a night in a Berber camp under the stars, and breakfast in the Sahara before the drive back. The best option if your time in Morocco is limited.
Zagora in 2 Days — Is It Worth It?
Zagora is not Merzouga. The dunes are smaller, the drive is shorter — around 6 hours from Marrakech each way — and the landscape is different: more palm groves, more ancient kasbahs, more of the Draa Valley than open Sahara. If you have been to Merzouga before, Zagora feels like a different side of the same country.
For travelers with only 2 days to spare, Zagora makes far more sense than trying to rush Merzouga. The camel ride, the Berber camp, the sunset over the dunes, breakfast in the desert — all of that is here, without the 9-hour driving day. You arrive before dark. You leave after sunrise. The experience is complete.
The route goes through Ait Benhaddou — the UNESCO kasbah used in Game of Thrones, Gladiator and The Mummy — and follows the Draa Valley south, one of the longest rivers in Morocco, lined with palmeries and Berber villages that have barely changed in centuries.

Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Zagora
Early pickup between 7am and 8am. The drive south crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. First stop: Ait Benhaddou, the most famous kasbah in Morocco, used in dozens of film productions including Game of Thrones and Gladiator. Lunch in Ouarzazate. The afternoon follows the Draa Valley south — one of the most scenic drives in Morocco, through palmeries, ancient fortified villages and the occasional camel on the roadside. Arrival at the Zagora dunes in the late afternoon. Camel ride to the camp at sunset. Dinner, fire, music, stars.
Zagora sunrise → Ouarzazate → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
Up before dawn for the sunrise over the dunes. Breakfast at the camp before the camel ride back. The return drive retraces the Draa Valley north, with different light and a different mood. Stop in Ouarzazate if the group wants to visit the Atlas Film Studios — the largest film studios in the world outside Hollywood. Back through the Atlas Mountains and into Marrakech between 7pm and 9pm depending on traffic.

What is the detailed itinerary for a 2-day Zagora tour?
Pickup at 8am from your hotel in Marrakech. Day 1: Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) → Aït Benhaddou (proper visit, not a photo stop) → lunch in Ouarzazate with a visit to Taourirt Kasbah → Draa Valley → camel ride at sunset (1 to 2 hours) → night in a bivouac under nomad tents with dinner and fire. Day 2: sunrise over the dunes, breakfast at camp, drive back through Draa Valley and Ouarzazate, back in Marrakech between 7pm and 9pm. Zagora is a rocky desert — small dunes, big sky, quiet camp. If you know that going in, the experience delivers.
Is a 2-day Zagora tour worth it, or should I do 3 days to Merzouga?
Depends on who you are. Zagora works well if you want the desert without committing 3 days, you're on a budget, you care more about the drive — Atlas, Aït Benhaddou, Draa Valley — than iconic dunes, and you prefer a quieter, less touristy camp. It works less well for families needing maximum comfort or anyone whose main goal is the classic orange dune photos — that's Merzouga and 3 days minimum. Simple rule: Sahara is the goal → Merzouga. Desert is part of a bigger Morocco trip → Zagora delivers without taking over your itinerary.
How much does a 2-day Zagora desert tour cost?
Shared group tours start at €80 per person at Samra Voyages — includes transport, camel trek, bivouac under nomad tents, dinner and breakfast. Lunch on the road is not included, budget €10 minimum per stop. Private tours start at €110 for 2 people. Some operators advertise €65 and upgrade-sell the camp on arrival — ask before booking exactly what camp level is included and whether bathrooms are shared or private. The difference between a basic camp and a decent bivouac is usually €15 to €20 per person.
Zagora vs Erg Chegaga — which is better for a 2-day trip?
Zagora, without question. Erg Chegaga is 7 hours from Marrakech vs 5h30 for Zagora — plus a 4x4 piste from M'Hamid of another 1h30 to 2 hours each way on rough track. On a 2-day trip you'd spend more time in a vehicle than in the desert. We don't offer Erg Chegaga as a 2-day tour for that reason. Erg Chegaga is worth it — but it needs 5 days minimum. Simple rule: 2 days → Zagora. Want the real remote Sahara → Erg Chegaga, plan 5 days.
What should I pack for a 2-day Zagora desert tour?
Keep it light — one soft bag, not a rigid suitcase. Long trousers for the camel ride (skin irritation on bare legs is real). A warm layer for the evening — desert nights drop fast even in summer. A scarf or chech for wind and sand. Comfortable closed shoes for the dunes, sandals for the camp. High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm. Power bank — no charging points at the camp. Cash in dirhams for lunch, tips and drinks. Sleeping bag not needed — blankets and mattress provided. Put overnight essentials in a small daypack before departure; your main bag stays in the vehicle.
