Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip from Marrakech
110 metres of waterfalls dropping into red-rock pools, surrounded by olive and argan trees, with Barbary macaques living in the cliffs above. The best single-day natural spectacle within reach of Marrakech.
Ouzoud — The Falls That Earn the Drive
Most waterfalls you visit in Morocco are small. Ouzoud is not. The main cascade drops 110 metres in three tiers into a pool at the base, kicking up a permanent mist that catches the light and produces rainbows on sunny mornings. The sound reaches you before you see the falls — a low roar that gets louder as you descend through the olive and almond trees on the path down.
The Barbary macaques that live here have been around tourists long enough to be completely unafraid. They will sit next to you while you eat, take food from your hand if you offer it, and occasionally steal whatever you leave unguarded. They are the unofficial highlight for most visitors, especially children.
The small restaurants built into the cliffside at the base of the falls serve tagines and grilled fish with the cascade as a backdrop. It is one of the better lunch settings in Morocco. The walk down from the parking area takes about 20 minutes and involves some uneven stone steps — nothing difficult but worth knowing about if anyone in your group has mobility issues.

Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech → Ouzoud (2.5 hours)
Pickup between 8am and 8:15am. The drive north takes about 2.5 hours, crossing the Marrakech plain before climbing into the foothills of the Middle Atlas. The landscape changes noticeably — greener, cooler, with olive groves replacing the dry plains around Marrakech. Arrival at Ouzoud mid-morning, which gives the best light on the falls and the least crowded conditions at the base.
Descent to the Falls
Walk down through the olive trees to the base of the falls — about 20 minutes on a well-worn path. The first view of the full cascade appears around a bend in the path. At the base, the mist from the falls keeps the temperature noticeably cooler than the surrounding area. Follow the path around the pool for different views of the cascades. The macaques appear throughout — on the path, in the trees, on the restaurant terraces.
Lunch, Exploration & Return
Lunch at one of the cliffside restaurants facing the falls — tagine or grilled fish, mint tea, the sound of the water. Optional boat ride in the pool at the base (30 MAD, not included). The afternoon is free for exploring — the traditional water mills upstream, the path to the top of the falls for a different perspective, or simply staying at the base. Return drive to Marrakech, arriving between 6pm and 7pm.

Is the Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip worth the 3-hour drive?
Yes — with realistic expectations. The drive is 2.5 to 3 hours each way. On our shared tour you get around 8 hours at the falls — enough time to walk all the viewpoints, hike down to the base, have lunch on a terrace over the water and take the boat ride. What makes it worth it: 110 metres of cascades in three tiers, emerald pools at the base, rainbow mist when the sun hits right, and Barbary macaques everywhere along the path. The one honest downside: the climb back up from the base is steep — 110 metres of steps in the heat. Wear proper shoes and go down in the morning while it is cool. Rated 4.6/5 on Viator from nearly 2,000 reviews.
Is the Ouzoud day trip suitable for kids and elderly?
Yes — with some nuance. For children, the Barbary macaques and the boat ride make it genuinely memorable. From around 6 years old the descent is manageable. Under 5, the rocky path requires carrying — possible but not comfortable. Supervise closely around the monkeys — they are friendly but fast and will grab food, bags or sunglasses. For elderly or limited mobility, the upper viewpoints and terrace restaurants are accessible without descending all the way. The view from the top is genuinely good. Donkeys are available for hire for the climb back up. Proper shoes with grip are non-negotiable at any age — the steps near the mist are slippery. Children on a parent's lap travel free on shared tours.
What to pack for an Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip?
Two things most people forget: a change of clothes and a waterproof bag for the phone. The boat ride at the base gets you properly soaked — not spray, completely wet. A dry bag or zip-lock for the phone matters where the mist is constant. Sturdy closed shoes with grip — the steps back up are steep and slippery from the mist. Swimsuit if you want to swim in the emerald pools. Sunscreen and a hat for the exposed viewpoints. Cash in dirhams for the boat ride (30 MAD), lunch (80 to 150 MAD) and tips. For the drive: 3 hours on winding Middle Atlas roads — take motion sickness medication before departure if needed. Monkey protocol: keep bags zipped and food inside a closed bag. They are fast.
Best time of year to visit Ouzoud Falls?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the sweet spot — 15 to 25°C, strong water flow, lush vegetation, manageable crowds. The falls are most photogenic when the flow is high after winter rains or snowmelt. Summer works well for swimming in the pools at the base — refreshing when it is 35°C on the trails. Go on a weekday in summer to avoid weekend crowds from Marrakech and Beni Mellal. Winter gives you the falls almost to yourself and often the most powerful flow — the path is slippery and cold near the base but worth it for photographers wanting dramatic conditions and empty viewpoints. Arrive by late morning regardless of season — boat queues and restaurant terraces fill up by early afternoon.
Common safety tips and what to watch out for at Ouzoud?
Ouzoud is a safe destination. A few things worth knowing: the path is steep and slippery near the mist — proper shoes are non-negotiable, flip-flops are genuinely dangerous on those steps. Some viewpoints are unfenced with 110-metre drops — stay back from edges, especially with children. The monkeys are the most common "incident" — they are fast and confident. Keep bags closed, eat food inside rather than walking with it, do not hand-feed them. For swimming, use the calmer side pools away from the direct flow under the main cascade where the current is strong. Cold water year-round. Low risk of petty theft but standard awareness applies in crowded viewpoint areas.
