Oukaimeden Day Trip from Marrakech — Africa's Highest Ski Resort
75 kilometres south of Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains receive enough snow between December and April to sustain Africa's highest ski resort at 3,268 metres. Skiing, snowboarding, or simply standing in the snow while Marrakech bakes below — all of it within 90 minutes of your riad.
Oukaimeden — Snow in Africa, 90 Minutes from Marrakech
The idea of skiing in Morocco surprises most people. The reality is that the High Atlas receives significant snowfall between December and April, and Oukaimeden — at 2,600 metres on the plateau and 3,268 metres at the summit — holds snow well enough to run 23 kilometres of ski runs and a chairlift that is the highest on the African continent.
The resort is not Courchevel. The facilities are modest, the runs are ungroomed, and the day pass costs about €6. What it is, is genuinely extraordinary — skiing with the Moroccan desert visible in the far distance, the sound of the muezzin drifting up from the valley on a Friday, mint tea in a mountain hut between runs. It is one of those experiences that does not fit into any normal travel category.
For non-skiers, the visit is still worthwhile in winter. The drive up through the snowy Atlas is beautiful, the Berber villages at altitude look completely different under snow, and the view from the plateau across the mountains is one of the best panoramas in Morocco.

Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech → Ourika Valley → Oukaimeden
Pickup at 8am. Drive south through the Ourika Valley road, climbing steadily into the High Atlas. The cedar forest around 2,000 metres is home to Barbary macaques — look for them in the trees on the roadside. The road to Oukaimeden branches off the Ourika Valley route and climbs to the plateau through a series of dramatic switchbacks. Arrival at the resort around 10am, leaving most of the day on the slopes.
Skiing / Snowboarding / Snowshoeing & Return
The resort has rental equipment available on site (skis, boots, snowboards — quality is basic but functional). The chairlift runs to 3,268 metres. The main run — "La Combe" — holds snow longest and is the most reliable. Non-skiers can walk the plateau, use snowshoes, or simply enjoy the extraordinary mountain panorama from the summit. Mint tea and traditional Berber snacks are available at the mountain huts. Return to Marrakech in the late afternoon, arriving around 5pm to 6pm. Optional: stop at the Ourika Valley on the descent for tea by the river.

When is the ski season at Oukaimeden?
December to March, peaking in January and February. The resort sits at 2,600 metres base and 3,268 metres summit — high enough to hold snow reliably through the core winter months. January and February give the best conditions: 50 to 100cm snow depth at the summit, fully operational lifts. December is patchy early season. March gets slushy by afternoon but morning sessions are still good. Oukaimeden gets busy on weekends — Moroccan families drive up from Marrakech and Casablanca. Weekday departures give you quieter slopes and shorter lift queues. We confirm snow conditions before departure — if the road or the snow is not worth the drive, we reschedule.
How far is Oukaimeden from Marrakech?
75 to 80 kilometres by road, 1.5 to 2 hours depending on conditions. The route goes through the Ourika Valley before climbing steeply to the resort at 2,600 metres. In winter with snow on the upper road the drive can take longer — your driver will have snow chains and know the conditions. The road is paved all the way to the resort. Departure from Marrakech at 8am means you are on the slopes by 10am. One thing people forget: Marrakech might be 18°C when you leave — Oukaimeden will be 0 to 5°C with wind. Dress for the mountain, not for the city.
Do you need to book ski equipment in advance?
Not strictly — several rental shops operate at the base with full kits (skis, boots, poles) for 200 to 250 MAD per day. Our guide knows the best operators on site and will steer you towards good equipment at fair prices. You can also negotiate directly on the day. During peak weekends in January and February, advance booking is recommended for specialized gear like snowboards. For standard ski rental, walk-up is generally fine. Bring cash — card payments are not standard at the rental shops. Lift passes run 100 to 300 MAD depending on duration.
Is Oukaimeden suitable for beginners?
Yes — the resort has dedicated nursery slopes at the base with gentle gradients, separated from the steeper terrain above. Around half of the 10 kilometres of runs are classified easy. Ski school instructors are available on site, primarily in French and Arabic with some English speakers. For complete beginners, factor in 1 to 2 hours with an instructor — most people get moving independently on the nursery slope within that time. The resort is not Verbier but it is a genuine ski resort with real snow and a proper mountain atmosphere at 2,600 metres. Lift pass approximately 100 to 300 MAD, equipment rental 200 to 250 MAD.
What to pack for a ski day trip from Marrakech?
Layers are essential — the altitude and mountain exposure make this the most weather-sensitive day trip from Marrakech. Base layer: moisture-wicking thermal top and leggings. Mid layer: fleece or light down jacket. Outer layer: waterproof shell jacket and waterproof trousers — non-negotiable if it is snowing. Thick ski socks, waterproof gloves, warm hat. Goggles or sunglasses — UV at 2,600 metres is intense even on overcast days. High SPF sunscreen for the same reason. Skis and boots available to rent on site. Cash in dirhams for lift passes, equipment rental and lunch. Snacks and water for the slopes. Altitude note: some people feel mild effects at 3,268 metres — stay well hydrated throughout the day.
