Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour — 3 Days via the Sahara

The most efficient way to see both imperial cities and the Sahara desert in one trip. Start in Marrakech, sleep in the dunes, arrive in Fes on Day 3. No backtracking, no wasted time.

3 Days / 2 Nights Merzouga → Fes Every day from Marrakech 2 to 14 people (shared)

Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara — Why This Route Makes Sense

Most people fly into Marrakech and out of Casablanca — or vice versa — which means they end up doing a return journey on the same road. This tour solves that problem. You start in Marrakech, cross the Atlas Mountains, spend a night in the Sahara desert at Merzouga, and arrive in Fes on Day 3. The circuit is complete. No backtracking.

The route covers a remarkable amount of Morocco in 3 days: the High Atlas and Tizi n'Tichka pass, the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, the Draa Valley, the Dades Gorges, Erg Chebbi and the Sahara, the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas around Ifrane, and finally the medieval medina of Fes — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world.

This is the tour for travelers who want to cover ground without feeling rushed. Three days is tight but it works because the routing is logical — every stop flows into the next. Shared group departures run every day. Private departures on any date.

Detailed Itinerary

1
Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

Pickup between 7am and 8am. South over the Atlas Mountains via Tizi n'Tichka. Stop at Ait Benhaddou — one of the most photographed sites in Morocco, used in dozens of major film productions including Game of Thrones and Gladiator. Lunch in Ouarzazate. Afternoon through the Dades Valley and the dramatic Dades Gorges — narrow canyon roads with fortified kasbahs clinging to the cliffs. Overnight in a guesthouse in the Dades area.

2
Day 2

Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Merzouga → Desert Camp

Morning drive through the Todra Gorges — a 300-metre slot canyon with a river running through the base. Continue east across the Tafilalet plains to Merzouga. Arrival at the dunes in the late afternoon. Camel ride to the Berber camp at sunset. Dinner cooked on-site, music around the fire. The night sky over Erg Chebbi — with no light pollution for 100 kilometres in any direction — is as dark as Morocco gets.

3
Day 3

Merzouga → Midelt → Azrou → Ifrane → Fes

Early sunrise on the dunes before breakfast. The drive north covers completely different terrain: from the Sahara edge north through Midelt and the High Atlas, into the cedar forests around Azrou — stop here for the Barbary macaques that live in the trees and have no fear of humans whatsoever. Through Ifrane, Morocco's mountain ski town that looks inexplicably like a Swiss village. Arrive in Fes in the late afternoon — your guide can drop you at your riad or hotel in the medina. The tour ends here.

Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour — FAQ

What should I know before booking a Marrakech to Fes desert tour?

This is a one-way tour — it ends in Fes, not Marrakech. You need onward transport from Fes: direct flights to Europe from Fes-Saïss airport, trains to Casablanca or Rabat, or continue your Morocco itinerary independently. The tour covers 3 days and 2 nights, including one night in the Sahara at Erg Chebbi and one night in a guesthouse in the Dadès Valley. Lunches are not included — budget €10 minimum per stop. Entrance fees are never included.

Is a 3-day or 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour better?

The 3-day version is tight but works — the routing is logical and every stop flows into the next. The main trade-off is that Day 3 involves a long drive from Merzouga to Fes with only one real stop at Azrou. The 4-day version adds an extra night at Merzouga, giving you a full day in the desert before the drive north. If you want more than just a night in the dunes, take 4 days. If your schedule is fixed and 3 days is what you have, it delivers.

What is the typical cost of a Marrakech to Fes desert tour?

Shared group tours start at €110 per person — includes transport, one hotel night in Dadès Valley, camel trek, one night in a desert camp at Erg Chebbi, breakfast and dinner at the camp. Lunch not included. Private tours start at €380 for 2 people. The tour also runs in reverse — Fes to Marrakech — at the same price. Ask us when booking.

What to pack for a Marrakech to Fes desert trip?

3 days across southern and central Morocco means different climates in the same trip. One soft bag. Long trousers for the camel ride. A warm layer for the desert camp night — temperatures drop fast after sunset even in summer. A scarf or chech for wind and sand at Merzouga. Closed shoes for Aït Benhaddou and the desert walk, sandals for the camp. High SPF sunscreen — Atlas altitude and desert reflection both burn fast. Power bank — no charging at the desert camp. Cash in dirhams for lunches, entrance fees and tips. Blankets provided at the camp, no sleeping bag needed. Note: the tour ends in Fes, not Marrakech — pack for onward travel from Day 3.

Best operators for a private Marrakech to Fes desert tour?

For a private tour, the key questions to ask any operator: Is the vehicle dedicated to your group only? Does the guide speak fluent English? Is the camp at Merzouga mid-range or basic — and are bathrooms private or shared? Are commission stops at carpet shops included in the itinerary? A serious operator answers all of these directly. At Samra Voyages, private Marrakech to Fes tours start at €380 for 2 people — dedicated 4x4, English-speaking driver-guide, no shop stops unless you request them.
