6-Day Tour from Marrakech to Chefchaouen via Sahara

Six days across the full width of Morocco. The Sahara desert, the medieval medina of Fes, the blue painted streets of Chefchaouen, the Atlantic capital of Rabat, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca — and back to Marrakech through the Middle Atlas.

6 Days / 5 Nights Merzouga · Fes · Chefchaouen · Rabat · Casablanca Every day from Marrakech 2 to 8 people

The Morocco Circuit — Six Days, Five Cities, One Complete Picture

Most Morocco itineraries force a choice — the imperial cities in the north or the desert in the south. This tour does both. It is a one-way circuit that starts in Marrakech, heads south to the Sahara, then sweeps north through Fes, Chefchaouen, Rabat and Casablanca before the return flight from Casablanca or a train back to Marrakech.

Six days is tight. There are no slow mornings and no wasted afternoons. But the routing is logical — each destination flows into the next without backtracking — and the variety is genuine. One day you are riding camels at Erg Chebbi. Two days later you are lost in the oldest medieval medina in the world. The day after that you are looking at blue painted walls in the Rif Mountains.

This is the tour for travelers who want to understand Morocco as a whole rather than one part of it. If you have ten days, do the 10-day version. If you have six, this is as much as Morocco can give you in that time.

Detailed Itinerary

1
Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Todra Gorges

Pickup at 7am. South over the Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka. Stop at Ait Benhaddou for the UNESCO kasbah visit with a local guide. Lunch in Ouarzazate. Continue through the Valley of the Roses and Dades Valley to the Todra Gorges. Dinner and first night in a guesthouse at the gorges.

2
Day 2

Todra Gorges → Erfoud → Merzouga — Erg Chebbi Camp

Morning walk in the palm grove of the Todra Valley before the drive east to Merzouga via Erfoud and the fossil marble quarries. Arrival at Erg Chebbi in the afternoon. Camel ride to the Berber camp at sunset. Dinner around the fire under a sky with no light pollution for 100 kilometres in any direction. Second night in the desert camp.

3
Day 3

Merzouga sunrise → Azrou Cedar Forest → Fes

Up at 5am for the Erg Chebbi sunrise. Breakfast at the camp and camel ride back. The drive north covers the full length of Morocco's eastern corridor — Midelt, the High Atlas, the cedar forest at Azrou where Barbary macaques live in the trees and have absolutely no fear of humans. Through Ifrane — Morocco's mountain town that looks like a Swiss village — and into Fes in the late afternoon. Third night in Fes.

4
Day 4

Fes Medina → Chefchaouen

Morning in the Fes el-Bali medina with a local guide — the tanneries, the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque (the oldest continuously operating university in the world, founded 859 AD), the dyers' souk, the brass workshops. Fes is genuinely overwhelming and genuinely extraordinary. Afternoon drive through the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen. Dinner and fourth night in Chefchaouen.

5
Day 5

Chefchaouen → Rabat

Morning to explore the blue medina of Chefchaouen — the narrow painted streets, the main square with its café terraces, the Spanish mosque above the city with the view down into the blue rooftops. The blue paint, used for centuries as a natural mosquito repellent, now makes Chefchaouen one of the most photographed cities in Africa. Drive to Rabat. Afternoon visit to the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Fifth night in Rabat or Casablanca.

6
Day 6

Casablanca → Marrakech (or flight home)

Morning in Casablanca — the Hassan II Mosque, the Corniche, the Art Deco architecture of the colonial city centre. The mosque is the third largest in the world and one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslims (guided tour required, 120 MAD). Afternoon return to Marrakech by road (3 hours) or end of tour in Casablanca for onward flights.

6-Day Marrakech to Chefchaouen Tour — FAQ

How long does it take to get from Marrakech to Chefchaouen?

Driving directly, Marrakech to Chefchaouen takes around 8 to 9 hours — roughly 570 km via the A1 motorway through Casablanca and Rabat. On this 6-day tour we do not drive it directly. Instead we head south first to the Sahara, then north through Fes before reaching Chefchaouen on Day 4. The total circuit covers around 1,800 km. Each day's drive is broken up with stops, so you are never in the vehicle for more than 5 to 6 hours at a stretch.

What is the best route from Marrakech to Chefchaouen — via Fes or direct?

Via Fes is the better route for anyone who wants to see more of Morocco — and it is the route this tour takes. The direct route (Marrakech → Casablanca → Rabat → Chefchaouen) is faster but misses the Sahara, the Atlas Mountains and the Fes medina entirely. If you only have 2 days and Chefchaouen is your sole destination, direct makes sense. For a 6-day circuit, going via the desert and Fes gives you a complete picture of the country.

What is the best time of year for a Marrakech to Chefchaouen tour?

March to May and September to November are the best months. Spring brings green Atlas landscapes and comfortable desert temperatures — Erg Chebbi nights are cool but not cold, and daytime drives are pleasant. Autumn has the same balance with warmer evenings. July and August are possible but the Sahara reaches 45°C during the day, which makes the desert camp experience less enjoyable. December to February works well for the imperial cities but Chefchaouen and the mountain roads can get cold and wet.

Is 6 days enough to see Marrakech, the Sahara and Chefchaouen?

Six days is enough to see all three properly — but it is a full circuit with no idle days. You spend one night in the Sahara at Erg Chebbi, one night in Fes, one night in Chefchaouen, and one night in Rabat or Casablanca before the end of the tour. Each destination gets meaningful time: a full morning in the Fes medina with a local guide, a sunrise at the dunes, a walk through Chefchaouen's blue quarter. If you want to linger anywhere, the 8-day version adds two extra nights. Most travelers find 6 days leaves them satisfied but already planning a return.

What is included in the 6-day tour from Marrakech to Chefchaouen?

The tour includes private transport in an air-conditioned 4x4 or minivan throughout, an English-speaking driver-guide for all 6 days, 5 nights of accommodation (guesthouse at Todra Gorges, Berber camp at Erg Chebbi, riad in Fes, hotel in Chefchaouen, hotel in Rabat or Casablanca), camel ride to the desert camp, and local guided visits in Fes and Ait Benhaddou. Flights, most meals, and entrance fees are not included unless specified. There are no hidden costs — we confirm the full breakdown before you book.
