2-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to M'Hamid
M'Hamid El Ghizlane is the last village before the open Sahara. Where the paved road ends and the desert begins. Two days is exactly enough to get there, experience it properly, and return — without rushing.
M'Hamid — Where the Road Ends
M'Hamid El Ghizlane sits at the end of the Draa Valley, 250 km south of Ouarzazate, at the point where the tarmac road runs out of desert to cross. Beyond it is Erg Chegaga and then Algeria. Most visitors never get this far south — which is exactly what makes it worth the trip.
The dunes at M'Hamid are on Erg Lihoudi — lower than Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, but quieter and less visited. The camel ride to the camp at sunset, the fire, the night sky — all the same core experience as the more famous desert destinations, with fewer people sharing it.
The drive from Marrakech follows the same route as Zagora — Atlas Mountains, Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, the Draa Valley — but continues further south, deeper into the palmeries, past the old sign that reads "Timbuktu 52 jours" (52 days to Timbuktu by camel), all the way to the end of the road.

Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Zagora → M'Hamid
Pickup from your hotel between 7am and 8am. The drive south crosses the Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka and stops at Ait Benhaddou. Lunch in Ouarzazate. The afternoon follows the Draa Valley all the way south — through Agdez, past Zagora and the famous Timbuktu signpost, continuing to M'Hamid El Ghizlane. Arrival at the dunes in the late afternoon. Camel ride to the camp at sunset. Traditional Berber dinner around the fire. The stars at M'Hamid are exceptional — this far south, the horizon is completely dark in every direction.
M'Hamid sunrise → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Atlas → Marrakech
Early wake-up for the sunrise over the Erg Lihoudi dunes. Breakfast at the camp before the camel ride back. Lunch in Ouarzazate. Back over the Atlas and into Marrakech between 7pm and 9pm. Drop-off at your hotel.

What is special about a desert tour from Marrakech to M'Hamid?
M'Hamid El Ghizlane is the last village before the open Sahara — where the paved road ends and the desert begins. Beyond it is Erg Chegaga and then Algeria. The Draa Valley drive from Ouarzazate to M'Hamid is one of the most underrated routes in Morocco: 200km of palmeries, ancient fortified villages and open sky. The famous "Timbuktu 52 days by camel" signpost on the edge of town puts the location in perspective — this was once a major node on the trans-Saharan caravan route. Most visitors never get this far south, which is exactly what makes it worth the drive.
Recommended itinerary for a 2-day Marrakech to M'Hamid tour?
Day 1: Pickup at 7-8am. Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) → Aït Benhaddou → lunch in Ouarzazate → Draa Valley south through Agdz and Zagora → M'Hamid El Ghizlane. Camel ride at sunset on Erg Lihoudi dunes, night in Berber camp. Day 2: Sunrise over the dunes, breakfast at camp, drive north back through the Draa Valley. Optional stop at the Zagora market (Wednesdays). Lunch in Ouarzazate. Back in Marrakech between 7pm and 9pm.
What is the average cost of a private M'Hamid tour from Marrakech?
Private tours start at €80 per person. This is private only — no shared group departures for M'Hamid because the distance makes it impractical for a mixed group on a fixed schedule. The price includes transport, camel trek, one night in a Berber camp, dinner and breakfast. Lunch on both days is not included — budget €10 minimum per stop. Entrance fees at Aït Benhaddou (around 20 MAD) are not included.
M'Hamid vs Zagora camps — what is the difference?
Both are in the same general region of southern Morocco and share the same Draa Valley approach road. Zagora's camp area (Tinfou dunes) is about 100km north of M'Hamid and more visited — more operators, more camps, more activity. M'Hamid is quieter, more remote, and the Erg Lihoudi dunes have fewer neighbours. The drive to M'Hamid is about 90 minutes longer each way. If you want efficiency, Zagora. If you want the feeling of being genuinely at the edge of the desert, M'Hamid.
Best time of year for a M'Hamid desert visit?
October to April is the sweet spot. Spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November) give the best combination: warm days, cool nights, good light for photography. Winter (December–February) works well but nights near M'Hamid drop to near freezing — bring serious warm layers. Summer (June–August) is brutal: above 45°C in the day with no shade on the road south. Possible but not recommended. One practical note: M'Hamid is further south than Zagora and Merzouga, which means it is hotter in summer and colder in winter — plan accordingly.
