Toubkal — Africa's Second Highest Summit, 2 Hours from Marrakech

From the terrace of a riad in Marrakech you can see the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas on a clear winter morning. Toubkal is the highest of those peaks — 4,167 metres, the top of North Africa. The approach from Imlil takes two days at a reasonable pace, with a night at the CAF refuge at 3,207 metres.

This is not a technical climb. There is no rock climbing, no ropes, no equipment beyond good boots and warm layers. The route follows a well-marked trail through the Mizane Valley and up a long scree slope to the summit. In summer the ascent is a hard but straightforward hike. In winter (December to April) crampons are required and the experience changes completely — the summit views extend over a white landscape with the Sahara visible in the far south.

The village of Imlil at 1,740 metres is the starting point. The Ait Misane Valley below Toubkal is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Morocco — walnut groves, terraced Berber villages, the sound of the river. Getting to the summit and back is the objective. The journey through this landscape is the reward.

Stop at the marabout of Sidi Chamharouch at 2,350 metres — a white-painted shrine at the base of a boulder, considered sacred by local Berbers. Continue up to the Toubkal refuge at 3,207 metres. Dinner at the refuge, first night at altitude.

Summit Day — Toubkal (4,167m) & Return to Imlil

The summit plateau is marked with a metal pyramid. On a clear day the view extends across the Atlas range and, in winter, to the Sahara. Descent back to the refuge for breakfast, then continue down to Imlil. Second night in Imlil in a guesthouse.

Day 3

Imlil → Valley Walk → Marrakech

Rest morning in Imlil before the return drive to Marrakech. Optional short walk in the valley while your legs recover from Day 2. Arrive back in Marrakech around midday. Toubkal Summit Trek — FAQ

How difficult is the Toubkal climb — do I need to be an experienced hiker?

Toubkal is a demanding hike, not a technical climb. The summer route (May to November) requires no ropes, no crampons and no mountaineering experience — just solid physical fitness and some previous hiking experience. The ascent from Imlil to the summit gains 2,300 metres over two days. If you regularly hike for 5 to 6 hours carrying a pack and are comfortable on steep rocky terrain, you have the physical baseline. The winter route (December to April) is a different matter — snow, ice and crampons are required, and prior winter walking experience is necessary.

What is the best time of year to climb Toubkal?

Late spring and autumn are the best windows — specifically May to June and September to October. The trails are clear of snow, the temperatures are manageable (cool at the refuge, cold at the summit), and the visibility tends to be excellent. July and August work but afternoon thunderstorms are common and the summit can be crowded. Winter ascents (December to March) are for experienced hikers only — the mountain is fully snow-covered and requires crampons and ice axes.

How high is Mount Toubkal and where is it located?

Toubkal stands at 4,167 metres — the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and in North Africa outside of the East African volcanoes. It is located in the High Atlas range, about 70 kilometres south of Marrakech in Toubkal National Park. The trailhead village of Imlil is 1,740 metres above sea level, reachable in about 1.5 hours from Marrakech by road. On a clear day from the summit you can see the Sahara to the south and the Atlantic coast to the west.

What should I bring for the Toubkal trek?

Layers are the priority — temperatures at the refuge (3,207m) drop below zero at night even in summer, and the summit is reliably cold and windy. Bring a warm sleeping bag or confirm the refuge provides adequate blankets. Good ankle-support hiking boots are essential on the rocky summit approach. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for the descent. Sunscreen, sunglasses and plenty of water (3 litres minimum for summit day). A headlamp for the 5am summit start. Your guide and mule handle the heavy logistics — you carry only what you need for the day.

What is included in the 3-day Toubkal tour from Marrakech?

The tour includes transport from Marrakech to Imlil and back, a certified mountain guide for all 3 days, a mule for luggage transport to the refuge, two nights of accommodation (one night at the CAF refuge at 3,207m, one night in a guesthouse in Imlil), and breakfast each morning. The refuge dinner is available on-site at extra cost (around 150 MAD). Entrance fees to Toubkal National Park are included. Equipment rental (crampons for winter, trekking poles) can be arranged on request.
