Best Day Trips from Marrakech — Ranked & Compared

Five very different destinations within a day's drive. You probably only have time for one or two. This guide tells you which to choose — and which to skip if your time is limited.

June 2023 By Tarik J. — Morocco Tour Specialist, Marrakech

Marrakech sits at an extraordinary crossroads. Within a day's drive you have the Atlantic coast, the highest peak in North Africa, the best waterfalls on the continent, a UNESCO kasbah that has appeared in more Hollywood films than most actors, and valleys that feel centuries removed from the medina. The problem is not a lack of options. It is too many.

Essaouira — The Atlantic Contrast

Essaouira — The Atlantic Contrast

Two and a half hours west of Marrakech, our Essaouira day trip — full details in the Essaouira travel guide is the one that surprises people the most. They expect a beach town and get something much stranger and better — a blue-and-white medina ringed by 18th-century Portuguese ramparts, an Atlantic wind that never stops, a port where the fishermen still sell their catch on the quayside, and an art scene that has been quietly thriving since Jimi Hendrix came here in 1969.

The pace is completely different from Marrakech. Nobody hassles you in the souks. The streets are wide enough to see the sky. Lunch on grilled sardines at the port costs 40 MAD and is one of the best meals you will eat in Morocco.

Best for: Anyone who needs a break from Marrakech's intensity. Photographers. Seafood lovers. Those interested in Moroccan art and crafts (Essaouira is famous for its thuya wood workshops).

What most people miss: the ramparts at sunset, and the small street behind the port where the fishermen repair their nets in the morning. Also — Essaouira is very windy. It is nicknamed "the wind city of Africa." Bring a layer even in summer.

Ouzoud Waterfalls — The Most Dramatic Natural Stop

The Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip — covered in depth in our Ouzoud waterfalls guide — 150 km northeast of Marrakech on the road to Azilal — the falls drop 110 metres into a series of red-rock pools, surrounded by olive and argan trees, with Barbary macaques living in the cliffs above. In terms of pure spectacle per hour of driving, Ouzoud might be the best value day trip from Marrakech.

The visit works like this: you park at the top, walk 20 minutes down a steep path through the trees, and then spend two to three hours at the base of the falls. There are small restaurants and cafes built into the cliffside — lunch here with the falls as a backdrop is genuinely one of the better meals you will have in Morocco. The macaques will try to steal your food. They succeed more often than not.

Best for: Families. Nature lovers. Anyone who wants dramatic scenery without a long drive (2.5 hours from Marrakech). The walk down and up is manageable for most fitness levels.

Best season: Spring (March–May) when the falls are at maximum volume after winter rains. In summer the flow reduces but the swimming pools at the base are more appealing.

Ait Benhaddou & Ouarzazate — For History and Film

The most historically significant day trip from Marrakech. Ait Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage ksar — a fortified Berber village — that served as a staging post on the trans-Saharan caravan routes for centuries. It has also appeared in more films than almost any location on earth: Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Prince of Persia, Babel.

The drive is three hours each way — the longest of any day trip from Marrakech — because it crosses the Atlas Mountains via Tizi n'Tichka. Most people find the drive itself to be part of the experience. Those who just want to arrive quickly will be disappointed.

Ouarzazate (25 km further east) adds the Atlas Film Studios if you want them — the largest studio complex outside Hollywood. Interesting for film enthusiasts, not essential for everyone else.

Best for: History and architecture lovers. Film enthusiasts. Anyone planning a longer Morocco trip who wants to see the south in a day before deciding whether to return for a desert tour.

Ait Benhaddou is also a stop on all our desert tours — see it as part of a multi-day Sahara trip.

Ourika Valley — The Easy Mountain Escape

The closest mountain destination from Marrakech — about an hour south. The Ourika Valley follows a river into the High Atlas, past Berber villages clinging to the hillsides and market gardens terraced into the slopes. At the end of the valley, at the village of Setti Fatma, a trail leads up to a series of seven small waterfalls. The walk takes about 45 minutes each way and is easy enough for most people.

This is the day trip that works well as a half-day. You can leave Marrakech at 9am and be back by 2pm if you want. It is also the cheapest and most flexible — you can get there by taxi or local bus independently.

Best for: Short stays. Travelers who want a taste of Berber village life without committing to a full day. Good option on the day before or after a desert tour when you want something lighter.

Imlil & the Atlas Mountains — For Serious Walkers

Imlil is the base camp for Mount Toubkal — at 4,167 metres, the highest peak in North Africa. You do not need to climb Toubkal to have an extraordinary day at Imlil. The village itself sits at 1,740 metres, surrounded by walnut trees and apple orchards, with snow on the peaks visible even in late spring.

A day trip here works well as a gentle walk through the valley, a visit to a Berber household (most guesthouses welcome day visitors), and lunch in the village. For more active travelers, a guide can take you on a 4 to 6 hour loop through the surrounding villages and valleys.

Best for: Hikers and mountain lovers. Those interested in authentic Berber culture with no tourist infrastructure. Saturday visitors can catch the weekly market in Asni (15 km before Imlil).

How to Choose

You only have one day: Ouzoud if you want nature and spectacle. Essaouira if you want a complete change of atmosphere. Ait Benhaddou if history is your priority.

You have two days for day trips: Essaouira on one day, Ouzoud on the other. These two cover the most ground in the least overlap.

You are travelling with young children: Ourika Valley or Ouzoud. Both are manageable physically and interesting for kids. Avoid Ait Benhaddou for very young children — the terrain is uneven and the drive is long.

You are a serious hiker: Imlil, without hesitation. The other options will not scratch that particular itch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best day trips from Marrakech?

Marrakech is unusually well-placed. The Atlantic is 2.5 hours west, the High Atlas is visible from the city, and the desert starts 40 minutes south. The five most popular: Essaouira — the best contrast to Marrakech, Atlantic port city, relaxed pace. Ouzoud Waterfalls — 110 metres of cascades and Barbary macaques, the most dramatic natural day trip. Ourika Valley — closest Atlas escape, one hour from the city, good for families. Ait Benhaddou — UNESCO kasbah used in Gladiator and Game of Thrones, best with a private guide. Agafay Desert — 40 minutes from Marrakech, works best as a sunset and dinner experience.

How to book a day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech?

Three options: shared group tour (€20 per person, hotel pickup included, argan cooperative stop on the way, nearly 8 hours in Essaouira), private tour (€100 for 2 people, your vehicle and pace), or Supratours bus (€8 to €10 each way from Bab Doukkala, comfortable but fixed schedule and no stops). For most travelers, the shared group tour is the simplest option — book directly with a local operator rather than through a platform like GetYourGuide where the margin adds to your price. Departure between 7am and 8am means you arrive mid-morning with the full day ahead.

Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip — tips and costs?

Shared group tour from €25 per person — hotel pickup, 8 hours on site. Private from €100 for 2 people. On the ground: boat ride at the base (30 MAD, worth it), lunch at cliffside restaurants (80 to 150 MAD). Key tips: arrive at the falls in the morning — the main viewpoint restaurants fill up by early afternoon and boat queues build. Bring a change of clothes if you take the boat ride (you will get properly wet). Sturdy shoes — the steps back up from the base are steep and slippery from the mist. The Barbary macaques are habituated and photogenic — keep bags closed, they are fast.

Best Ourika Valley activities for families?

The valley is excellent for families. The restaurants with tables literally in the river are ideal for children — shallow water to play in, easy terrain. The hike to the first Setti Fatma waterfall (20 minutes up a rocky path) is manageable for children from about 6 years old. For younger children, the riverside walk and village visit are plenty. The aromatic herb garden stop on the way is genuinely interesting for kids. Monday departures pass the Tnine Ourika weekly souk — a genuine Atlas market worth seeing. Children who can sit on a parent's lap travel free on shared tours.

Ait Benhaddou guided tour — what to expect?

The day starts with a 3-hour drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres — the most dramatic road in Morocco. At Ait Benhaddou, a local guide takes you through the ksar explaining the mud-brick architecture, caravan history and film locations (20+ productions including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia). Shared tours allow 45 minutes — enough for a quick walk. Private allows 1.5 to 2 hours to climb to the top granary and understand what you are looking at. Most tours continue to Ouarzazate for lunch and the Kasbah Taourirt. Total day: 12 to 13 hours — the longest day trip from Marrakech.
